Steve picked me up with the sun shining brightly so it promised to be at least a nice trip. Once the monthly checks were completed we left the mooring and headed towards the mouth of the Dart. When travelling to Brixham Steve said it looked rough out which was a surprise to me but sure enough it was decidedly lumpy as we heeded past the Mewstone.
We continue to be surprised at the sea keeping qualities of the boat and today’s trip certainly was a good test with a large swell …

You may have read about our problem with our Navman GPS. Over the last three trips or so the time taken to acquire sufficient satellite’s had been getting longer and longer until on the last trip .  Looking for some guidance (sorry) about the problem showed that our inability to secure satellite’s, was not unusual! This sparked some debate about the way forward and if the fault was significant, whether we should replace it, and upgrade at the same time to either 3D or side scan sonar.
On one of the forums there was …

Dartmouth Fishing Again

Dartmouth Fishing Again after a short break to accomodate my summer holiday. It was a fine day when I set off for Brixham to pick up Mike and make the trip to Noss Marina. After much delay I believe that Noss Marina has finally got the go ahead to develop the site so our currnet berth could start to look quite different in the future.
We slipped our moorings and headed down the Dart intending to have a short inshore fishing trip. We had noticed recently our Navman Trackfish 6500 had …

With the weather setting reasonably fair, but about to worsen, we decided to go fishing this week on Thursday. As the conditions were fairly flat another Skerries trip seemed favourite, since the Bass have yet to arrive over our marks.
Another trip to our live bait tackle shop for lug worm (still no rag worm) Steve arrived and we set off for the Skerries Eastern buoy. The boat was really on song as we skimmed along at 17 knots with power left in store. Getting nearer we saw that a …

Polling Day – We Voted To Go Fishing

The picture reflects the theme of the day, the General Election. In the foreground you see one of the major parties, in the mid distance a slightly fogged less popular major party and in the distance a small but prominent third party.
Well alright I am getting really desperate now as I have little to record on the fishing front. We left just on the high tide on what was a warm but wet and foggy day. We visited a couple of local marks and apart from launce nothing was brought …

The ‘Plaice…. two’ be…Skerries, Devon

Well it had to happen sooner or later…..Steve and I decided that we would try the Skerries for some plaice or anything else really. So off I went before Steve arrived to buy some live bait from my local tackle shop, Brixham Bait and Tackle. They only had lug worm left so we made do with that (although preferring rag worm really) and headed home to await Steve’s arrival.
For the last couple of years or so we have concentrated on lure fishing, for Bass in particular. Our reasons to go for bass …

People Catching Fish

People Catching Fish is a very popular pastime and today we novice fishermen joined them again! It has been a while since we did any fishing due to the weather and the annual refit but today the weather was glorious and we needed to test the boat after the annual refit.
It was a sunny morning as we arrived at Noss Marina and boarded a very clean and shiny Blue Marlin III. We set off at nearly the top of the tide and had a pleasant journey down to the mouth …

Fishing Boat Refit

Fishing Boats can be an expensive hobby as we found out to our cost last year with our Quicksilver 630 Stern Drive when its engine failed and blew two pistons. It was following that experience that we traded it in for our current boat an Ocqueteau 645 originally named Straight Laced. This was in the middle of last season so we knew we would have to spend some time with her out of the water this spring.
We booked the crane to lift us out at Noss Marina on Monday the …
